The protagonist of the show is Dexter Morgan, a forensic scientist for the Miami Police Dept. He's also a serial killer. However, when he was young, Dexter's adoptive father (a cop) recognized the tell-tale signs of Dexter's inner monster, and taught him a set of rules to channel his impluses, for his own survival. So the adult Dexter doesn't kill innocent or random people - he only targets those who have killed other people and either could or will do so again. Kinda like a vigilante, except that where a vigilante is above all concerned with dispensing justice, justice is really just Dexter's excuse for his narrow criteria of victims.
