Why the fuck would the Greeks even need to second think this offer from the EU? An upfront loan and half of your debts forgiven is overly generous. Take it while you still have a country.

Two words Austerity measures........essentially save the government and wealthy elite in the country arses and then socialise the losses.

Fuck the EU.

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.

This has nothing to do with the "wealthy elite". It is the fault of the general Greek citizen for being lazy. The "wealthy elite" didn't cause this, the self-entitled Greek citizen did.

There was a lot of credit around. The Greek character is known to have a weakness for living in the here and now. They took a big handful of 'free money' and spent it on the good life. Now the Greeks won't pay up, and their like a infectious agent because the Italians and Spanish are watching closely to see if they get away with it. The Euro won't survive if the whole of Southern Europe defaults. :smoke:

I hope it doesn't you cannot have 15 or so separate economies with one currency that they are interdependent on. It undermines sovereignty and economic independence of which could of being used to get Greece out of the shit without bring down countries who were responsible with their finances.

All part of the fragmentation or decompostion process around the world as modern civilization crumbles to nothing. :smoke:

Why not? It used to be all the economies used the same currency: gold.

Then again, I haven't figured out why failing to pay half of one's debts avoids counting as a "default", either. Miss an interest payment, and you're in default, but miss half the principal and you're not?

Because the common people are nearly ready to go up in bloody revolt over the austerity measures that have come in force already, and would likely do it if anything more comes up (which WOULD happen if the new plan is put into effect)?

Plus, IIUC, this has to be approved in parliament, and Papandreou can't get a confidence vote.

Greece is fucked.
No one there wants to pay taxes, the rich have been moving their money off-shore, and they wont cut spending to sustainable levels.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

A military coup would also immediately scupper membership of the EU, never mind the EURO. So it ain't gonna happen.

Meanwhile, Sarkozy, Merkel et al told Papandreu "no more dosh until Greece confirms it wants this deal". If Greece were to reject the deal in an early December referendum, then it would be utterly screwed. It would certainly make for an interesting Christmas period (Western or Orthodox, take your pick).

But since it now looks as if the government has lost its majority, it's all up in the air. We're likely to see elections rather than a referendim.

The problem is governance, not that Greek people are lazy as sin. If you keep on electing the wrong people and keep on turning a blind eye to what they do, you'll eventually pay for it. Something the Irish have only recently started to learn for themselves. :ddpan:

The latest is that Papandreou is to offer to resign. "Watch this space" :levi:
