Greek PM Papandreou faces party revolt over bailout

Six leading members of Greece's governing Pasok party have called on Prime Minister George Papandreou to resign, the day after he called a referendum on the proposed EU bailout.

One MP has defected from Pasok, cutting Mr Papandreou's parliamentary majority to two seats - 152 out of 300 - ahead of a confidence vote on Friday.

The opposition has called for early elections, saying the referendum jeopardises Greece's EU membership.

European markets have fallen sharply.

Last week, eurozone leaders agreed on a 100bn-euro loan (£86bn; $140bn) to Athens and a 50% debt write-off.

In return, Greece must make deep cuts in public spending, slashing pensions and wages, and making thousands of civil servants redundant.

(continued)

Hoping the markets will normalise over the two weeks of christmas&new year when trading will be light? or after the referanendum in early newyear? :smoke:

That whole area has never been right since the Ottoman Empire collapsed.

Not very in-depth reporting is it? Just the barest facts. Why call a referendum on the bailout? Do they object to the clauses? Are they mad?

It's a way to get back at the Germans for not telling anyone about the 44billion euros they had under their mattress whilst organising the Greek financial castration prog a couple of weeks ago. Markets don't like uncertainty and the Greeks have maxed that to the limit now. :smoke:

Brazil needs to do its part! They're due to overtake the UK as 6th largest economy any time now, so I read in the Torygraph. With modest wealth comes modest responsibility...
Come on, cough up the readies!

If the Greek government collapses first - and that might even be by later today - then the referendum might not happen at all. At least one government MP has already defected, possibly two. The government only had a majority of 3. There's a confidence vote in a couple of days, and at least six ministers are now calling for the PM to resign.

Moving on.....

There's definitely a hilarious quip to be done here, to do with "Brazilians" and "hair-cuts". You see, it's a deliberate juxtaposition of definitions, for comic effect. I'll work on it later.
