I got a secondhand WD 2 terabyte HD on ebay for £35 and a usb docking station for hard disks for £11, again from ebay.
Both work perfectly, and you can change the HD dead quick.
I keep all my recorded video on hard disk. It's so much cheaper and easier to browse.
( it's a shitter if a disk fails though ).
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Carbonite is $59 a year, and I don't have to carry it around. Traveling with one's external hard drive runs the risk of it being lost or stolen. That is true, too, of a laptop, of course, but if one keeps one's sensitive material on Carbonite, the loss of the laptop does not involve the loss of the sensitive data or material. I considered the external hard drive (I already use an external hard drive for back up) but the added benefit of being able to access my files by visiting a website and entering a password is more attractive than carrying the external drive around.

I can basically carry around a laptop with very few things actually stored on it (especially no passwords and other such things), and use the laptop as a portal to my data, which is better protected by Carbonite than me.

How much is storage at Carbonite and can you post a link to a document there?

$59 a year, and I don't know what you mean by a link to a document. I don't think so. But, I don't need that.

That's 2 T online storage? What if you need more.

By link I mean can I post a link to a document there for people to read who don't have a password?

I don't remember what their limit is. But, I don't need 2T online storage. I am good with being at G level rather than T level for quite a while, as I work only with email, word docs and pdfs - I have almost nothing in the way of video or images.

I don't think so. It's primarily an online backup. I think Microsoft Office 365 can do that, though, but that is a more involved system, and I frankly haven't the patience to deal with Microsoft...

I really only need access to the documents for myself, and if I want someone else to have a doc, I can email or fax it.

My sites are rather document heavy, and I was looking for a way to put up a streamlined version for easier searching.

Apparently, it's possibly to sync documents between OO/Libre and Google Docs with an addon called ooo2gd.

As an alternative, you could get a free DropBox account, dump everything in there, and use whatever-the-hell desktop office application you choose to open the files from anywhere.
