Radioactive Wolves.

Too interesting not to share. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes ... sode/7190/

What happens to nature after a nuclear accident? And how does wildlife deal with the world it inherits after human inhabitants have fled? The historic nuclear accident at Chernobyl is now 25 years old. Filmmakers and scientists set out to document the lives of the packs of wolves and other wildlife thriving in the “dead zone” that still surrounds the remains of the reactor. Buy the DVD. This film premiered on October 19, 2011. (Video limited to U.S. & Territories.)

It turns out that DNA has mechanisms for dealing with mutations, able to modify the mutation rate not only for too much damage, but too little. We have evolved to evolve, and because of this we have automatic machinery for detecting and correcting errors and suppressing and exciting mutations that writers in the 1950s had no idea existed. That's why radioactive areas like that around Chernobyl aren't full of mutant slime monsters. Of course, simply being able to evolve in such an environment is no guarantee against slow developing chronic conditions due to radiation exposure, but DNA never cares about the experiences of individuals.

I was hoping for at least one Fenris from this. :(

Watched this on TV a few days ago - fascinating, especially how most of the animals seem unchanged even after living with and ingesting huge amounts of radiation. And the whole ghost town angle is eerie and somehow hopeful, with nature reclaiming the land... I'd love to go on a photo expedition there.

I saw an exhibit of pictures shot there using a film that's sensitive to radiation. (Experimental film, they have endless problems with it apparently.) The strangeness was almost beyond belief.

The Prepiat Marshland was a major blocker for Operation Barbarossa. Shame they drained them.

There's one out there by a motorcyclist who carried a counter around to make sure she wasn't getting too much radiation, and took pictures of both the leftovers of civilization in the evacuated towns, and the forest and the wildlife, but with more concentration on the towns. If you can't find it yourself, I'll see if I have an old bookmark and if it's still online. Just ask.

Interesting how a nuclear disaster can be so much better for nature than was the presence of humans.

Thanks for the clip, FBM. The parts without the narrator's voice have an almost Stalker-like feeling to them. Tarkovskij was a genius.

It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." - Maureen J

Just proves how much humans fuck this planet up.

Sorry about the limited viewing area. I guess I'll have to jack a copy and put it online somewhere.

My pleasure. I'm hoping that since it's PBS, the whole thing will eventually uploaded in sections.
