My situation is this:

I have, say, a hundred folders on my desktop computer I may or may not access on a daily basis. Inside those folders are subfolders, and documents (word, .pdf, etc.).

I need to keep all those documents organized as they are, by folder. But, I would like to be able to access them using any computer, anywhere. I.e. if I'm traveling, I want to be able to access my files, edit, and do whatever, and then when I get back to the office, have the files automatically sync so I don't wind up with different versions on my laptop and different versions on my desktop, etc.

It seems that what you're looking for is an on-line storage and/or backup facility that you can also use as a network drive. You don't want to run applications remotely.

Just Google "on-line file storage network drive" and check the various services on offer. I don't use 'em myself, so I am no authority on how good they are. :read:

I'd just get a shell account and use an FTP program - the Mozarella one isn't bad, though I haven't used it in some time ( I prefer CLI :P ).

Just keep your documents out of the Public folder and you'll be ace.

I've decided the Office 365 is overkill at this point. I don't need to run online software, and I can deal with not having an "automatic synchronizing" of files on various computers. So, I'm just going with an online file back up that allows me to access those files from any computer and work with them. I just have to make sure that on my "main" computer, I resave any documents I edited on my laptop. Not a big deal, though.

Office 365 is a good idea in principle, but it just feels so cumbersome dealing with Microsoft. It's always something that takes days of wrangling and wrestling with the computer to get to work right.

Anything that I want to access away from home, I email to my account at hotmail or gmail.
I can log in to those emails anywhere, and open the files, edit them and email them again to save them.
It's not a complicated process.

I am also not dealing with just a few documents, nor can I predict which files I will need on a given day.

I have about a hundred folders, each of which have documents, and most of which have subfolders also containing documents. Some are word documents, some are .pdfs, etc. Emailing them to my hotmail account would be disorganized and a waste of time. I have like 12 gigabytes of just documents, including Word and pdfs.

So, what I've decided to do is just utilize and offsite storage service and I've uploaded everything, so I have like a mirror of my hard drive accessible on the web. Anything I need, I can just log in from any computer and grab it. I will normally be using my own laptop for that purpose.

Gotmypc is fine, except you always have to keep your computer running. If you're out of town and for some reason the power goes out, or the cleaning person kicks the plug out of the wall, or whatever, you're fucked.

And if the world ends tomorrow your files will be deleted anyway.

Only 12 gigs? Huh.. my collection is bigger.

Yeah, some sort of online storage service sounds like the way to go. Something with FTP access and maybe first month unlimited bandwidth (since you'll want to upload it all) is what I'd go with.

Yes, but now that they are up online, it protects against disasters short of the eschatological anyway...

You can also get solid state laptop hard drives, that you can plug in to any pc via usb.
I have a 500 gig ordinary laptop drive in a tiny casing, USB powered.
You can take it and use it anywhere, you just have to be a little more careful than with a solid state one.

Yeah, SSD would be ok I guess. I had a 1 tb backup of my desktop drive. It fell less than 16" one day and was done.
