American students told to say Mexican pledge of allegiance

O.k., so this was in a Spanish language class, and the teacher as part of the curriculum made the students stand and recite the pledge of allegiance to Mexico and the Mexican national anthem.

Now, it's important to know that in the US it's illegal force students to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States. Students must have the option to opt out, and the Pledge of Allegiance must always be voluntary, purely voluntary. You can't be punished for not saying the Pledge by being given work assignments in the alternative.

I don't like the fact that the teacher has everyone holding their arms forward in that sort of fascist salute while saying the Pledge of allegiance to Mexico. If it's part of the language course, then one would think it would be recited not as a pledge per se, but as any other passage of written material. The girl in the class who refused to recite the Mexican pledge was given a substantial research project as an "alternative" to reciting it.

I don't like it. I find some of the shit going on in south western States wherein Mexican flags are being flown by US public schools is inappropriate. And, there are plenty of other items of written material in Spanish that can be read, not the Mexican Pledge of Allegiance. Why not the Spanish pledge of allegiance or the Spanish national anthem? Why not the Agentinian one? Why did "Ms. Santos" pick the Mexican ones?

Re the school exercise: I definitely don't like it either. Imagine asking a subject of HM Liz 2.0 to recite the French pledge of allegiance - or vice-versa. And there are much worse pairings than that.

I had to learn "La Marseillaise" in French class in college. :x

I wish Clinton had been with me. I didn't have the nerve to protest it back then.

La Marseillaise - a fine work. I learned it voluntarily, it wasn't an assignment.

Nah, that's rubbish. Sounds like a cat being strangled in a dirty bathtub.

Well Coito seems to be being all serious as if there's some sort of problem. But all that's happened is a student, for her own personal reasons, didn't want to do some classwork. What am I missing?

The point.

You know this person well enough to know her motivations?

Well yeah, I know I am - which is why I asked someone to explain what it was.
