This, of course, could never happen on the internet.

How helpful. Care to expand? If you are scared of legal repercussions, you can always finish off with "That's what I've been told."
I'm not saying anything and just like Rum, it's something I've no knowledge about. I ain't never heard of the place and never been there. Know nothin' about it. :smoke:

If I was even remotely interested in doing anything illegal on the internet, I'd thank you for the link. Because I am not, an "Oh!" will have to suffice.

I used to go "near missing" in the libraries at Purdue. Pick a catalog number and see what was near to it. I found a great book on Japanese parliamentary reform that way.

No one goes to libraries to read books.
They use the free internet to surf porn / face book, or they drop their kids off there as a free baby sitting service.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

I go to libraries to get books. I don't read them there.

You won't have that, because the precedent has been set with music sharing.

If I can get books and read them on my Nook for free from the library, and they are the same books I could buy, why would I ever buy them?

The reason lending libraries could exist was because the paper format allowed only one person to check out a book at a time, and copying entire works was cumbersome and expensive. Electronic copies are limitless.

So, if you have copyrighted material freely available from any computer, anytime, for free, then authors would never get paid.

That's no problem. It adds to the flavour of a masterpiece to know the author was poor and starving whether it be a painting or a book. :smoke:

I know as a lad who come from a family of limited means the library and my mums love of reading educated me and fuelled my curiosity about the world.

Hux is right this is cultural vandalism but the powers that be want culture to be about consumerism and retarded reality tv shows not fostering a culture of enquiry and critical thinking and love of learning.
I think that libraries are great. But, as society becomes more and more electronic and internet based, libraries will morph into internet portals and reading devices. When every book is available digitally, it will be easier for "the poor" to use their phone, computer, tablet or eReader to access the library and download what they want.

Eventually, a system will come to the fore to allow this to happen.

But, libraries are dying out for the most part for lack of use. As material gets more and more readily available at the click of a button, the trip to the library becomes less and less necessary, and people just don't go as often.

I remember in school, that a research project would entail trotting to the library, because we simply couldn't get the information sitting at home. If you wanted to learn about some sort of ancient culture or dinosaur or something, you had to go to the library and search through card catalogs (that were actual index cards, hand-typed), and then find books in stock, and go to microfiche for old periodicals and journals and that sort of thing. Today, I can put together a more extensive research paper in an hour than I could in a day 30 years ago, and it will be better cited and better researched.

Times change. The library isn't really going away - it's merely changing and evolving.

I remember the excitement when the Purdue library system went online. And the problems they had getting everything cataloged properly. One summer they literally scanned every book in the libraries to make sure they had them all. They didn't, of course, no project that larger is 100%. It became a game to find the books that had been missed.

I think libraries have a psychosocial importance. They are iconic. The op is about cuts and you can bet your life that no more than a token amount of the savings are being ploughed back into e library services. Besides, the internet is shit and soulless

Meh --

Libraries have a psychosocial importance to me and you, and folks like us and of our generation. When I stop by a library even to this day, I get sort of a somatic memory of when I was a kid and going to the library. For some reason, I really looked forward to my mom or dad taking me to the library when was 8 or 9 or 10 years old. I'd love to search for books through the stacks, and like Gawdzilla described, find stuff I'd not expected or ever heard of. I used to mull over what books to check out of the science fictions section, knowing that it would be weeks before we would come back. The musty smell of the library is something that I always associate with those long ago, long gone days.

But, times change, and all institutions go away and new ones take their place and soon the psychosocial importance attaches to the new places.

Take Facebook as an example: people sign onto facebook, get used to it, and then Facebook changes their layout our some features or something ,and everyone goes nuts - "bring back the OLD facebook!" -- then everyone gets used to it, and time goes by, and then Facebook changes again - and everyone complains again about how the revised facebook is now the "old" facebook and they don't want THAT one to change....and it happens over and over again...

I love libraries. But, they won't be necessary in a few years.

I used to love video rental stores too. Honestly, I don't know where there is one now, even if I wanted to go to one. Blockbuster is gone, as is every other chain.

And, what about the music/CD store - gone.

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.
- Bob Dylan.

20-0dd years ago, to get those lyrics, I would have to get in the car and drive to a library and look them up, or go to a music store and read the liner notes.

Today - I googled it in 3 seconds, cut and pasted it.

The times, they are a changin'

I love the sections of libraries with ancient texts....

I spent an afternoon once puzzling through the 17th century lingo of some of the Salem witch trials. Awesome.
