WOW!

http://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com ... t-artists/

A paper to be published tomorrow in Science by C.S. Henshilwood and colleagues reports the discovery of a 100,000 year old paint-making shop in a cave in South Africa. They found two abalone shells which had held a mixture of red ocher, animal marrow, and other ingredients, alongside stones and bones apparently used in mixing and perhaps applying the reddish paint.

Continues.

Neato. I've always liked the paintings at Trois-Frères for their significance in how shamanism evolved into proto-religion. The connection between art and 'spirituality' (for want of a better term) has always fascinated me - Trois-Frères being an example of animism.

I hope they find some cave paintings to go with that paint shop.

The most ancient use may well have been body painting.

Trois-Frères, Altamira, Lascaux...I'd love to be able to visit any one of them.
I remember reading that in one cave (I can't remember where) somebody discovered a 1 metre long clay statue of a bison(?) and nearby was a pit where the clay was excavated with children's footprints still clearly impressed in it.

Them's cool! Imagine sitting through a winter night in a freaking cave, wondering if the sun will ever be warm again. There's some clay available and you start to fiddle with it. A few hours later you're enthralled, caught up in the moment as you try to tease a beast out of the clay for the first time in history.
