Time for Liam to come out of the closet?
Liam Fox - gay or not?
He can be what he wants of course, but he presents as a married family man, a pillar of society and all the usual crap that politicians seem to think is important, but he has been gallivanting all over the world with his 'best man' and now we discover that during the last election campaign he was burgles. The Tories it seems tried to cover the story up, saying he was alone (his wife was stuck in Hong Kong because of the ash cloud), but it comes to light that a 'younger man' was staying there that night.
We have openly gay politicians - fine by me. Hypocrisy though I can't stand. Still - he's a politician, so by definition...
I'm taking bests on how long before he resigns - three days max?

It isn't the 1970s. Outside, inside and the undeclared...private issues and of themselves they should not be a resigning offence in this day & age.
Whether he'll get re-elected come an election? - given the prejudices of the average Tory voter is another matter.

I don't give a monkey's about his sexuality. Its the dishonesty, maneuvering and general squirming over the issue that is the issue. Also - the man in charge of our so called defense is quite possibly 'living a lie'.Crumple wrote:It isn't the 1970s. Back when homosexuality was illegal one of the issue for men in powerful positions was that they were open to blackmail. It happened not infrequently during the early Cold War era. If Mr Fox is gay and is that desperate to hide it that makes him vulnerable to at the very least 'influence' if not downright blackmail, and again, given hos position that isn't good enough.

I don't like the way our political elite carry on either but their entitled to have a private life and mess it up just like anyone else.Rum wrote:I don't give a monkey's about his sexuality. Of course they are, but not if in doing so they spend millions of our taxes inappropriately and can't do their job properly.Crumple wrote:I don't like the way our political elite carry on either but their entitled to have a private life and mess it up just like anyone else.Rum wrote:I don't give a monkey's about his sexuality. Cameron knows this, which is why Fox will have his marching orders in the next few days I suspect.

I don't care about the details of the OP, so just addressing it as a general topic ...
For me, it's not as black and white as accusing someone who feels they can only live and work under some kind of pretense, of hypocrisy.
What annoys me most when these situations come to light, is not that they've been "caught in the act" of hypocrisy, but that their consequent downfall is inevitably considered due to their immoral and/or hypocritical behaviour, and not the moralistic judgement of the culture that pressures them to behave in a certain "right" way, while forcing any deviation from that to be manifested in clandestine way.
Ayep, they shouldn't, but evidently they are. It's a shame people feel they have to hide things or live a lie due to the prejudices and wowserism that still exist.Crumple wrote:It isn't the 1970s. I was wondering when you would descend into your usual bollocks. I don't know why I bother.Crumple wrote:I sense a element of anger almost grudge. I wonder if it is to do with the cuts...with you Rum? Transferance?

I read this and was intrigued but it's not about me so I'm now instead relieved I can stay in here a while longer.

Re: Time for Liam to come out of the closet?
If Liam Fox goes it will not be because
he is a married gay man but because he has
broken the Ministerial Code by allowing his best
friend Kevin Werritty access to the Ministry Of Defence
without relevant security checks. David Laws himself a gay
man had to resign this year because he too compromised himself
by not declaring that he owned a second property that he shared with
his partner. On the issue of homosexuality in the Conservative Party one
could only go after someone who was an open critic of it whilst secretly being
one but even here one would need to give them the benefit of the doubt as it may
be a coping mechanism and not a deliberate attempt at deception. Remember that many
in the Party are opposed to gay marriage in spite of the David Cameron speech to Conference.
So let us not be too hasty in condemning anyone right now. But rather just see what actually happens

I'm trying to get people to start smoking. It's a subtle ploy to reduce the population to sustainable levels.Rum wrote:..and ever so cool.
