It'll beat shit out of the bloody Northwest furnace wind we're dealing with now.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

That's Arthur C Clarke: "History lesson"
Was there a film can in that one?
Yep! they're carrying a precious relic, that turns out to be a Mickey Mouse film and they worship him as a god, or something like that...haven't read it for ages. Part two has aliens discovering it thousands of years later, and thinking Mickey Mouse represented humans...

Must re-read some Clarke; it's been too long!

Thanks! I loved how the aliens thought the people of Earth were incredibly tough to survive such damage and carry on. :funny:

ETA: The film can was "holy", and bad things would happen if they opened it. (Mainly that the film would unwind and make a mess, but using "religion" to enforce the rule was the subtle point Clarke made there, "religious laws" have mundane origins and get elevated when people stop thinking about them and "just do it".

About me: I am an intellectual, a member of the Outer Party, and I live in the ruins of London. I grew up in the post-Second World War UK, during the revolution and the civil war after which the Party assumed power. During the civil war, Ingsoc placed me in an orphanage for training and subsequent employment as a civil servant. I maintain a squalid existence, living in a one-room apartment, eating a subsistence diet of black bread and synthetic meals washed down with Victory-brand gin. I keep a journal of negative thoughts and opinions about the Party and Big Brother, which, if discovered by the Thought Police, will warrant death, so don't tell on me. I am fortunate, because the apartment I live in has an alcove, beside the telescreen, where it cannot see me, and so my thoughts remain private.

The Party will institute a program to increase greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate against the sun's climate change activities.
To the future or to the past, to a time when thought is free, when men are different from one another and do not live alone — to a time when truth exists and what is done cannot be undone: From the age of uniformity, from the age of solitude, from the age of Big Brother, from the age of doublethink — greetings!
