The Pope was today knocked down at the start of Christmas mass by a woman who hopped over the barriers. The woman was said to be, "Mentally unstable."

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.

The Irish team have been practising Brockian ultra-cricket all winter, this non-contact variety is a piece of piss after that.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

Time for a salutary and character-building lesson to be dished out to the colonials. Come on KP, whose limbs were made in....errr....South Africa......Never mind that! He's as English as misery.

Rah, rah, rah! We're going to thrash the crims!

I demand that my feet be washed in Ricky Ponting's tears after this series be over...

336/7 at close of play in the first ashes test. A bit of a comeback after a dodgy start but I would like to see England hang around for one more session tomorrow and take that to 400 at least before I would call it a decent total.

Pretty even first day, I'd say. Pity about losing Flintoff & Prior late on, we'd have been well in front if those two were still in.

I think England have just shaded it there. Solid days play.

This Australian team is a pale shadow of teams past and is ripe for the thrashing. I predict a whitewash....
