Excellent vid on conscience/body dualism.

Comments are funny
Some dualists trying their damnedest to refute the argument but can't do it without using the arguments refuted in the video

Re: Substance Dualism
On this subject I really like Dan Dennet's "Kinds of Minds" which describes "consciousness" not as a binary "things have it or not" but as a gradual emergent process given enough time and neurons!

Much prefer Steven Pinker's The Blank Slate.AshtonBlack wrote:On this subject I really like Dan Dennet's "Kinds of Minds" which describes "consciousness" not as a binary "things have it or not" but as a gradual emergent process given enough time and neurons!

This is awesome, thanks for posting, Ani!
You'd be surprised how alive and well dualism is in the Humanities departments.
Or maybe not
Maybe I should show this at the beginning of my seminar next term; we have some foundational premises to agree upon at the beginning, one of which is that we will explore the subject from a monist/materialist standpoint. (the other is that we will use the Scientific Method to the best of our abilities)
(topic is application of evolutionary theory in the humanities, btw...

Re: Substance Dualism
He's making a follow up to this too. I can't wait. He's my second favourite YouTuber after AronRa. It's just a pity he posts so seldom.
He also posted this today along with the dualism vid.
It actually is very appropriate to the way I woke up this morning.

Re: Substance Dualism
The part where he mentions that all the physical substance in the body has been replaced very 7 years is interesting to me. He destroys the idea that this fact means that there's a non-physical substance that's responsible for identity. I would have gone a step further to point out that identity is merely a non-fixed convention in the first place, though, but still.

I was surprised he didn't mention that. I'm certainly a different person to what I was 7 years ago. My mind was not yet critical and sceptical then. The world was way simpler.FBM wrote:The part where he mentions that all the physical substance in the body has been replaced very 7 years is interesting to me. Re: Substance Dualism
I don't think it had much to do with making a refutation of dualism. He did that effectively w/out needing to go that far. Hell, if I had my way, he'd have gone into the problem with induction and Pyrrhonian skepticism, but I know that wouldn't have been very effective. Good thing I didn't make that vid, eh? I would have fucked it all up, for sure.Animavore wrote:I was surprised he didn't mention that. I'm certainly a different person to what I was 7 years ago. He had to limit the length of the vid while keeping it succint so I guess he found it superfluous.FBM wrote:I don't think it had much to do with making a refutation of dualism.
