D.A. charges Fullerton officers with murder, manslaughter

It's always great when your hometown is in the news :?

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/kelly-thomas/
"Now you see my fists? These fists are getting ready to [F] you up."

Those were the words of Fullerton police officer Manuel Ramos, who is being charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the beating of Kelly Thomas on July 5. The account of what happened that evening, provided today by Orange County Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckus, was chilling.

The D.A. didn't mince words, arguing that the use of force on the homeless, mentally ill Thomas was unprovoked, unrelenting and brutal. A second officer, Cpl. Jay Cicinelli, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and excessive use of force.
I have friends and family that have been following the case and involved in demonstrations because of an emotional investment in the case. A combination of the fact that so many people knew Kelly and what kind of a person he was (troubled but by all accounts friendly and quiet spoken) and that so many people have had run-ins with overly aggressive cops both on and off duty. I myself witnessed on a few occasions off-duty officers (who made it clear to those that didn't know, that they were officers) at bars trying to start fights, aggressively hitting on women, and just generally completely ruining the atmosphere and causing people to clear out. I'm sure there are very good guys on the force, but there has been a lot of animosity brewing for a long time that has added fuel to the fire. I'm very relieved that these officers are being prosecuted because no doubt there would have been unrest and possibly riots if that hadn't been the case.

Jebus Rachel! What a horrible case.

FWIW :hugs:

A news cap about the case (warning, some graphic images, as you can see):

Even Anonymous got involved, though the threat to take down the Fullerton online infrastructure didn't seem to ominous :shifty:

Still, nice that it got the word out there.

There are several phone videos, yes, which is part of the evidence that convinced the DA to press charges on at least two of the officers.

People like that have no business policing the public and I'm glad to hear they're being charged.

Many years ago I was working behind the bar in a pub here in Chester which was frequented by off duty coppers (and several professional shoplifters :hehe: ) and they were a pain in the arse - getting shit-faced and aggressive, demanding lock-ins, etc. In the end I was more or less forced out of my job because I refused to serve them any more and my lilly-livered boss wouldn't back me up. Fuckers.
