There are only two species of spiders in Australia that can kill humans. One of them, the Sydney funnel web spider, lives only in a few of the leafy northern suburbs of Sydney. The other, the redback spider lives all over Australia, but is rarely seen outside South Australia and Western Australia. It's favourite technique when feeling threatened is to flee. The total death toll by spider bite over the past 39 years is one.

There are many dozen redbacks in my garden. In summer I see them all the time. Here is one of them.



In the 14 years I lived here they have left me well enough alone.

But yeah, keep believing the myths of Australia's dangerous fauna. It's in good company with many other "facts" you know.

We get a shitload of Black Widows. I find their egg sacks all over, particularly under patio furniture seats. I get rid of the egg sacks, but otherwise leave them alone and they leave me alone. Same for all the bees and wasps, but the ground hornets are motherfuckers and I show them no mercy. Mosquitoes, if I can catch them, are slowly tortured to death. Ticks are put in an ashtray, squirted with lighter fluid, and immolated. Ants are summarily dispatched with noxious chemicals.
