I do understand that extremism is always called out when it is the right, but not so much when it is the left.

I'll look for alt-left or radical left-wing extremism called out, but I doubt I'll find any.

The fact is that there is very little left-wing extremism (or at least violent manifestations of it) in recent years. Antifa actions have always been reacting to neo-nazi marches etc. I've several times expressed some concern about even this, having the feeling that at least some of their motivation is an old-fshioned delight in street fighting for the sake of it. However, aside from perhaps one death in Portland, and some property damage, no real impact.

Several years ago, anti-globalisation protesters caused a lot of property damage in their demonstrations, but I cannot recall them killing anyone. Posting at the time, I commented that this damage was not helpful or justified.

I know which 'wing' gets policed more, here at Ratz, in the social media world, and in mainstream media. You probably do too, but it's hard to see from the 'centre' where you guys are.

Maybe you'll see why it's a shitty idea to create two worlds, one right and one left. I hope so, but I doubt it can happen. Watch what happens to online spaces that divide to support the right - you think it's gross rightie-ness, and you would be right. What you aren't noticing as much, is the gross leftie-ness, which increases in what remains of the public square.

If you think debate is worthwhile (I don't, which is why I don't bother with it unless someone really wants to take it seriously) then please seriously consider trying an experiment.

Pick a serious issue, and argue as best you can for the unpopular (right-wing) side of it. Note the response from those around you. (I would recommend not doing this outside an insulated space, since I think you risk law intervention for a growing list of speech offenses in your country)

I've tried that, and let me tell you, it pushed me VERY firmly away from the left. Not because of the strength of the right-wing arguments, but because of the quality of the left.

They really have lost the ability, or will, to fence lightly with ideas.

Note - this is CNN, no trust from me, and I don't know the story deeply. What I was referencing, is the political climate that allows someone to be arrested for speech. It may be 'just' in this case, I don't know. It IS something to be careful of, though. To be lawful, of course.
