No paper would want to risk a catholic backlash, if they got it wrong. Nobody would want that "scoop".
They would probably prefer to hang back, till someone else stuck their head up out of the trench.
Having said that, the blog said that Italian newspapers were reporting stuff, but he gave no links whatsoever, so it probably is an invention.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

And on the eve of the race meeting, Cardinal Turkson leads the field at 11/4 with Archbishop Scola challenging strongly at 3/1, both of them hotly pursued by Cardinals Ouellet and Bertone, neck and neck at 6/1.
Cardinal O'Brien has been withdrawn by his stable.

The ideal new pope would be black, and a woman.
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

The Catholic church would prefer 'asexual'.

There was the story about the astronaut who saw God.
He came back to Earth beaming and with joy shining from every part of him. The news media asked him : "What is God like?"
"Well", said the astronaut. "For a start, She's black.............."
