They don't need to win a war to win, they just need to provoke a major event. Just sinking a nimitz class aircraft carrier or two should do it - they are sitting targets with todays missiles. If America retaliates using nukes or hitting densely populated civilian areas it will lose all international support and be tret as a pariah state by the many countries it relies upon for essential imports of its own. Could be the Iranian plan is to push the US and get it growling enough to forget consequences of its own?

No it won't. If Iran sinks one of our carriers and closes the Strait, the world will rally behind the US in taking Iran down. We won't use nukes because we don't need to use nukes. We have sufficient conventional weapons, including stand-off weapons, to behead Iran's army and government in a couple of hours, rendering their military ineffective.

We'll do to them what we did to Saddam, and the people of Iran will rejoice.
