Murder rates, gang behaviour, poor housing, food, education, and high rates of criminal behaviour in the Jamaican male population has been well documented for some time. If they found a correlation between a negative perception of schooling and proclivity toward criminal and gang behaviour it's hardly surprising, but not necessarily causative. I think it is symptomatic actually - sour grapes if you like. People do what they have to to survive. In that situation they cannot afford to think long term, such as getting an education so they can be 'successful' in a stagnant job market in their adult years.

Just because it's a 'shitty' job doesn't mean it would be better to have no job. Where do you envision these employed workers going for work when their jobs are taken by machines? I don't mean to sound like a luddite, but their options are severely limited. It's a recipe for economic and social disaster.

Humans of course are not done away with in partially automated factories. There is still human work to be done, machines are still tools that just multiply human effort. Cheaper production through automation (as opposed to foreign labor) allows a high worker output rate which allows high wages and cheaper costs. Lower prices stimulates consumption, and offsets some of the factory losses. Still there will be some manufacturing job losses as fewer people can produce many goods.
The key factor is to make domestic human labor valuable, and you can do that by increasing efficiency and limiting cheap foreign labor options. Ditches don't dig themselves, so you'd be forced to fairly compensate them if it needs to be done.

Tariffs build walls between nations. The boys with the money don't pay attention to the borders. Therefore the money will trump the borders every time.
