It looks excited, rather than confused.

They're OK. They don't pack the punch a larger caliber hunting rifle does, and aren't as accurate at longer ranges.

Watermelon test - 1:06 for the .223, 2:16 for the 30-06.

Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

What they are is perfect for a mall, school or workplace massacre, recoil not excessive, fine for close to medium range, good at killing or maiming human beings, plenty of bullets in the magazine...

Lot of guys around here hunt with them, particularly for feral hogs and coyote.

Most popular rifle in 'Murika.

I'm not saying that they cannot be used for perfectly reasonable hunting tasks, just that, if you wanted to design a weapon ideal for mass shootings of your fellow citizens by a crazy person, it would be hard to go past an AR-15...

And there seems to be little to stop said crazy person from obtaining one...

Well, to be fair that is exactly what they were designed for, though there is a school of thought that claims they're designed more to wound than kill, hence the smaller caliber. Apparently a wounded soldier is more of a drain on enemy resources than a dead one.

I don't think there is a solution, we've made this Procrustean bed and now we get to sleep in it.

That is the reason for dum-dum's or soft nose bullets. Plenty of damage.

Feral hogs? I thought boars required really very high power stuff, because they are apt to come up and gore you, even if wounded unto death?
