Pensioner, this is a reminder to heed our play nice guidelines after the highlighted breech in the above post.
Gawdzilla is from Indiana and accusing him of being educated is almost as bad as saying he wouldn't sleep with his sister. Be more careful with what you say in future.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

Gawdzilla wrote:Ian wrote:Gawdzilla wrote:Ian, is the Chinese Navy anywhere close to moving out of the "frigate navy" phase into something more ambitious?
Short answer: Yes. Though it depends on how one defines "anywhere close".
Which isn't to say that the US Pacific Fleet is in danger of being matched. China's interested in deploying carriers and they've built a capable shipyard for constructing indigenous ones. And they're developing some very good missiles. But I doubt they're going to be a true, sustainable blue-water power in the forseeable future. They want to be able to impress and intimidate east Asia, and to stand up to the US response if and when the sh*t ever hits the fan regarding Taiwan. They may also be interested in developing capabilities against India, considering an awful lot of China's oil imports could currently be cut off by India at will.
How long until they have an effective carrier force, would you say?
It's hard to define "effective". Also, I'm not a China expert, and for the purposes of this discusion I'm basing all my information on unclassified internet sources.
Anyway, in the next couple years we'll see China fielding one or two old Russian carriers as well as the first indigenous ones, none of which will be close to Nimitz-class capabilities. And the defenses of those carriers will be questionable: the rest of their surface force is still loaded with relatively small frigates and destroyers, all of them technologically weaker than US ships - except in terms of their anti-ship missiles, specifically designed to face off against American Aegis defenses.

He really should know better. Another one like that and he's facing a suspension.

By "effective" I'm referring to the issues the Kreigsmarine faced with Graf Zeppelin, an almost complete lack of knowledge as to how to operate a carrier, and how to deploy them effectively. I would think it would take ten years or so to get reliable Air Bosses into the fleet, no?

For the next 10 years we will have carriers with no aircraft and hunter killer subs that keep getting stuck on rocks. Doh.

Does Port Stanley still have those "Welcome to the Malvinas" signs?

Couldn't do a Falklands style op these days but then we wouldn't need to. Shane to see the RN getting so small though
