The latest news from Mars

Post by lofuji » Tue Jan 05, 2010 12:35 am

This link is not really that interesting, except for the opening sentence:
New images of Mars suggest the Red Planet had large lakes on its surface as recently as three billion years ago.
It seems to be stretching the English language ever so slightly to describe three billion years ago as "recent".

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out brief candle
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing. [
Macbeth]

It am wicked to mock the afflicted. [
BH (Calcutta), failed]

Dope will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no dope. [

Mars would have cooled sooner than Earth, so it's "life window" would have opened sooner, yes?

I completely agree with you. But then it should have been written as "comparatively recently". Three billion years is hardly "recent" in the history of the solar system as a whole. Just me being a pedantic old bugger.

Oh, I thought it was "cute" as written. It reminds me of the talk about the budget: "A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking about REAL money."
