I must admit that this story raises a little bit of mixed feelings. On the one hand, it is good to see an islamic court condemning an attack on a woman and my first reactions was, "Yes, you bastards!" But then I thought, "Nah," it's too fucking medieval and barbaric. And we all know the high burdens of proof insisted on in shariah courts!

I can't help but think if my terrified, utterly blameless daughter had her nose and ears cut off by two cowardly pieces of shit then I would absolutely support the eye for an eye treatment. I would do it myself, throw salt on the bastard's wounds and then put a bullet in the back of their heads.

But that's just me.

I just merged the two threads and deleted the double OP. I'm not quite sure how that happened. My mouse sometimes double-clicks when it ought to just click, so I think that might have something to do with things.

It's possible to both condemn violence against people and to deal with perpetrators humanely, and therefore act with dignity, rising above the behaviour that is being condemned. Our society manages to do so for the most part.

I'm sure I'd feel the same way, Dev ... just the thought of anyone putting one of my children through that kind of torture leads me to vengeful thoughts ... and I could be capable of harbouring the hate enough to carry it out, too ... I'm also sure that (for me) the revenge would not be sweet, Hollywood-style, but ultimately hollow and degrading, and rather than alleviate our pain, would only serve to complicate and therefore exacerbate it.

I'm very glad the society I live in takes responsibility for the rights of perpetrators despite any vengeful sentiments of the victims and/or the victim's loved ones.
