Favourite film(s) of the last year
Winding it back a little bit from favourite films of all-time, what is your favourite film, or films, from the last year. Mine are:
Boxtrolls:
I don't understand how it only has a 6.9 on IMDB. The visuals were stunning, the story was full of meaningful subtext, and it was just incredibly sweet and also funny. One of those few films everyone in our family from age 6 to 37 really enjoyed. I'm looking forward to watching it again.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
If you hate Wes Anderson I guess you shouldn't even bother since in some ways it's the most Wes-Andersony film of all Wes Anderson films, but I think it's probably his best and funniest. It's irreverent and insightful, more violent than you expect from him and yet completely charming as always. I bought it on Blu-ray over the holiday and watched it again, and fell more in love with it.
Now you.

I haven't seen Boxtrolls yet but I agree wholeheartedly on Grand Budapest Hotel.
And I would like to add Guardians of the Galaxy

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

The Frame
Surreal sort of sci-fi drama, breaking down the fourth wall self-referentially. I won't say more than that. Really enjoyed it and now I'm going to have to watch "Ink" (previous movie from the same people) again. The directors/creators are indie so it's not easy to get it everywhere unless you buy directly from them but they're also quite happy for people to torrent it and send them love via their website.

[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Calvary.
Billed as a comedy, but people kept telling me this one was rather serious and not funny at all.
They were wrong. It was hilarious. One just needs a rather morbid sense of humour.
The Babadook.
Don't usually like horrors, but this one was top notch.
Stretch.
This film had difficulty getting a release. I'm not surprised as it points a mirror right at Hollywood.
And, of course, Guardians and Capt.
It wasn't a great year.

I just watched Gone Girl recently. I found it an incredible film.

There were really only two possibilities. The only thing I couldn't have predicted was that after the reveal it just - kept - going.

Yeah. I actually think that was one of the most interesting parts of the movie. I was scratching my head a bit while it was happening, but afterwards I really liked the tack it took.
