Yemen? Lucky he didn't get hauled off for a spot of waterboarding. :read:

What a bunch of slackers at the Canadian border.
"What the hell were you doing in Yemen?"

"I went to the island Socotra, it's not on mainland Yemen. It's a small island closer to Somalia. A very special place, some call it 'Galapagos of the Middle East.' I think 85 percent of the plants and animals there, are indigenous."

"Weren't you scared?"

"Yeah. I was scared. When I was at the airport in mainland Yemen. That entire area is now taken by al Qaeda, I believe."

The customs officer was looking at my passport no longer. If he would have leafed through, he would have found Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi stamps.
Odd, somehow he managed to skip Iran and Afghanistan.

Years ago, I had exactly the same thing happen to me.
The US border immigration refused to let me enter, because I wasn't carrying enough money to support myself.
I was hitch-hiking, and was travelling with some pretty rough people, so I had hidden my money in my boots. I didn't want them to know that I had some money, so I couldn't tell the Americans about my stash.
They said that they were sending me back to Canada, but my travelling companions were allowed in.

They actually said that they doubted that the Canadians would let me back in either, for the same reason.
I had visions of being stuck in the border for the rest of my life. But of course, when I walked back to the Canadian post, I got my money out to show them, so they were ok.

The US guards were ok, nice enough. Not too thorough though, they searched me, but didn't find my money.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Canadian border guards are nicer in my experience. I remember once crossing the border way before this 9/11 nonsense.

Canadian border guards: Do you have any guns or explosives?
Tyrannical: Oh no, should I have brought any? Why would I need them?
Canadian: That's alright, we just ask because some people bring them for hunting.
Tyrannical: Oh, OK, phew, because I didn't bring any.

American border guards: Do you have anything to declare?
Tyrannical: Well, we had a really good time, and I bought this newspaper in French, and I stole an ashtray from McDonald's with a Canadian maple leaf on it, and....
America: Move along, you don't look like the type to declare anything.
Tyrannical: :x

My Canadian was a jolly JohnCandy clone.

I did have the Canadians interrogate my kids in 1995, though. They were suspicious, my kids call us by first name. My son started it. My daughter has never called me dad.
