Voyager probe 'leaves Solar System'

The Voyager-1 spacecraft has become the first manmade object to leave the Solar System.

Scientists say the probe's instruments indicate it has moved beyond the bubble of hot gas from our Sun and is now moving in the space between the stars.

Launched in 1977, Voyager was sent initially to study the outer planets, but then just kept on going.

Today, the veteran Nasa mission is almost 19 billion km (12 billion miles) from home.

This distance is so vast that it takes 17 hours now for a radio signal sent from Voyager to reach receivers here on Earth.

Damn, beat me to it.

Anyway, Carl Sagan would be pleased ...

To be fair, the scientists are saying that it actually happened in August 2012. It's only now they've called it.

But doesn't it still depend what you choose to mean by 'the Solar System'?

It's a grey area - literally - especially as this the first time that we have collected data from something that had a chance to go that far out into space. I guess the Heliopause is just not that easy a boundary to pin down. It's probably a gradual transition, and I suspect it also moves around a bit.

Slightly chilling to think that this betamax spaceship will be sailing interstellar space long after the species that created it goes extinct.

Unless our fate is to digitise the universe and to rebirth it when the endless photon soup is about to pop out of existence..complete with Voyager somewhere between galaxies by then probably..

If we'd only waited a few decades, we could have sent much better tech to wow ET.

On the other hand, the thought of sending i-Tech out into the void ... aliens would have immediately marked us down as a shallow lot. :nono:

It was just on the news, and what struck me was the pack of lies that was sent out.

There was a voice recording of some woman talking about us coming in peace and harmony etc etc.

If the aliens find out what we're really like, they'll never trust the word of humans again. They'll probably point a gigantic vaporiser in our direction.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

We could always plead the Blues Brothers excuse:

"It wasn't a lie, it was just ... bullshit."

So, when do 'they' send it back after 're-fitting' it?
