The commision that sets their pay is likely to suggest a 10% rise while the party leaders claim they are against it there seem nothing that can be done to prevent such a pay rise which sounds very useful indeed to our elected masters.

Given that MP's get over £65,000 a year plus expenses most of the British public do not see why at a time their wages are being held down the MP's should get a 10% pay rise. Clearly there is going to be outrage in this country if this rise is paid surely there must be something can be done to prevent it are not these people supposed to be running the country.

There's never a shortage of people wanting to get into parliament, so you'd think the salary could be at least halved.

I've got no sympathy for our MPs, though I do think more try to do something for their constituents than are just in it for what they can get out of it.

It is true though that following a series of issues (expenses scandal etc) their pay has not kept pace with the increases many have had. Most people in similar roles in Europe get quite a bit more. Japanese MPs get three times the salary. No idea what Merican Senators and Congress members get but I imagine it is rather more.

Having said that I know quite a few people who were still in jobs when I left who have had actually pay cuts.

Seriously. Let the people who buy MPs pay a bit more for them, spread the load about.

When you compare the salaries of MPs to the salaries at the BBC, the difference is ludicrous. MPs don't get the going rate, for the importance of the job. That's because successive governments try to milk votes out of appearing frugal, when it comes to their own salaries.
The truth is that, if you don't pay enough, you put talented people off from standing. This doesn't apply to the conservatives, as most of their candidates are millionaires, and find ways of making the job pay even more, through directorships etc.
It penalises Labour candidtates mainly, and some Liberal.

Cut the BBC gravy train, and pay MPs more. MPs often only manage one term, the job security is shit.
Their pay isn't the problem, it's the pay of the higher civil service which is out of control.

They try to justify top civil service salaries, by comparing to salaries in industry, but top salaries on the boards of companies are pushed up by corruption.
The public sector shouldn't be competing with that.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Maybe BBC should take over the country and flog the rights to Hollywood?

I'm all for paying M.P's a lot more, however they are not allowed any business interests outside parliament at all have to use public transport and we get to behead them if they take bribes or fiddle expenses and the like.

Yeah, basic salary, but M.P's get all sorts of free money thrown at them for living expenses and the like and let's not forget, they're technically temps.

You watch. They will settle for a slightly less extravagant pay-rise - somewhere around the 6% mark - and hail it as a victory for pubic onion. The cynical may suggest that that was their plan all along. I couldn't possibly comment. :tea:

How about bribes? Is that figured into their salary?

Not really cynical more business as ususal. "We want to sell your children's spare kidneys!" "Outrage "Nah we've scapped that, just going to shit down hospitals nothing to worry about."

Government by placating manufactured reactionary alarmism. Not a bad tactic, dicey though.
