Teaching racial stereotypes?
Mrs TA spotted this the other day. It's an embossed lid from a metal tin that Offspring #1 acquired from somewhere. Around the sides are lots of animals (it's actually quite nice as an object with some mythology on it) - but on the lid here we see the loading of Noah's Ark.
Mrs TA asked Offspring #1 which person he thought was Noah. He looked for a moment, and identified the one. She asked me the same thing a little later. I looked, spotted the guy giving directions from the deck, and thought, that's him.
She said, "Did you notice anything?"
"No? What?"
"He's the only white person in the scene."
(Sorry the pic isn't 100% clear.)
Says a lot, I think.

Are you sure he's supposed to be white? It is not easy to tell. He's not as obviously black (which you could say is bad enough) but I am not convinced he is meant to be white - just grizzled.

On the actual tin he's quite distinctly a different shade to everyone else - the photo's not that good with the webcam. Spot the stereotyping on this project management book cover:

They definitely played down his blackness but I think he is still meant to be black - the facial features are certainly painted that way. The pale skin thing is not uncommon - corporate advertising use it all the time, choosing a 'barely black' token in their posters and videos. It is sickening really - it's OK to be black in business, as long as you're not too black.

Which is part of the point I was making with that book cover. The most prominent face in the line-up - and therefore the boss - is your canonical white alpha male. There is a coloured guy beyond him, but he is not too "coloured". And of course there is a also a woman in the picture, just to cover all the bases.Xamonas Chegwé wrote:They definitely played down his blackness but I think he is still meant to be black - the facial features are certainly painted that way. Good point! I hadn't noticed that before. It's sufficiently blurred to be ambiguous, but now that you mention it ...Animavore wrote:An Asian woman at that.klr wrote:Which is part of the point I was making with that book cover. Technically, the blurring is just the focusing effect, but I'm sure it suited them nonetheless. The focus is clearly on the the guy I identified as the boss (I have the book in front of me). I suspect the choice of focus was very deliberate as well.
Do we want to move this to another section, as it's straying well beyond religion?

Good idea - probably best in the general discussion / philosophy section? TA, you OK with that?klr wrote:Do we want to move this to another section, as it's straying well beyond religion?

Re: Teaching racial stereotypes?
You must have 1 Black and 1 Asian in any corporate photo or you aren't 'equal opportunities', apparently.
