Knowsley Safari Park baboon shot dead after escape

A baboon was shot dead after it escaped from its safari park enclosure.

The animal was killed after it managed to climb over the perimeter fence at Knowsley Safari Park in Merseyside at 10:15 BST.

The adult male had been chased out of its enclosure two hours before by a group of 20 males as it tried to protect its mate.

The safari park said it resolved the situation "quickly, safely and humanely".

The rule here is "shoot to kill" if one of our wolves gets out and is a threat to a human. This isn't rules we've made up, it's the federal government's orders.

There have been ten wolf attacks in North America since 1960 that I know of. Eight were "family pets", one was in a sanctuary after being rejected by its forever family, and one was in the wild.

We've never had an escape in the last 42 years.

Did you see where a kid fell into a back of painted dogs in Pittsburgh? Dead kid. These are predators and the people who make the rules are aware of that much, if no more. Normal wolves would not be seen by humans, but the European mythology of their ferocity is still out there.

Bottom line: Protect human life first. I've seen footage of a baboon taking on a full grown leopard and "winning". They are not the creature with whom you should fuck.

I have a healthy fear of primates. I was really just surprised to learn that you're required to try to kill an escaped wolf. Of course you did say "and is a threat to a human". Maybe there is some wiggle room for interpreting that in the wolf's favor.

A big male baboon has canines as big as a lions.
I wouldn't want to come round a corner and be facing a scared and panicky one. I'd rather face a wolf any day.
It's less likely to attack.

A park attendant was killed by the wolf pack in Sweden (Kolmorden) a year or so ago. I believe in preserving wildlife, but also in keeping the respect for humans alive. Those animals are not stupid, and if we start behaving like pray, we will be pray.l
