TWO homes have been destroyed and three families made homeless following a devastating field fire.

The blaze started about 4.30pm today in a field off Shoebury Road, Great Wakering, before the strong wind swept it across the road into another field to the east.

The flames raced through this field before tearing through two homes in Estuary Gardens, which were left completely gutted.

Fortunately, only two people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and stress.

Numerous homes around the field, off Shoebury Road, had their fences burned to a crisp while some lost their sheds and belongings left in the back garden.

More than 60 firefighters from 10 stations tackled the raging fire, including crews from Southend, Leigh, Shoeburyness and as far afield as Brentwood.

Scores of neighbours were out on nearby streets, including Seaview Drive, Brookside Avenue and Estuary Gardens, with buckets and hoses to protect their homes from the inferno as thick black smoke poured from the blazing field.

Police closed off the area to traffic, blocking Poynters Lane at the junction with Walering Road and Shoebury Road just after Seaview Drive.

The fire was finally extinguished about 8.30pm but crews remained behind to dampen down the houses and make sure the scene was safe.

I am so sorry for your losses in your neighborhood. I know what that's like, I live in Santa Cruz about 5 miles from where the Lockheed fire was, so I can relate.

It's the most exciting thing that has ever happened here in my life and the most tragic and the most worrying. Life is dull here. Mostly old people and empty houses. Those of you who remember weber he lives just up the road from it.

My parents in So Cal have a fire burning a few blocks from their house right now, the second time in two years. It's not a fun thing to go through.

I heard that. lol my mum is pretty god mates with the the woman who lost absolutely everything in the fire worst part was her daughter was just off about to go to uni and she lost her car, books, clothes everything. pretty messed up.
