Tornado in Victoria

Post by JimC » Fri Mar 22, 2013 7:47 am

We're used to hearing disaster stories from the US about tornados, but a large one ripped through several communities in the north of my state: http://au.news.yahoo.com/vic/latest/a/- ... ian-towns/
At least 20 people were taken to hospital, two in a critical condition, after two tornadoes cut a path of destruction across Victoria's north-east last night.

A severe storm moved across an area stretching from Cobram to Rutherglen just after 7.00pm (AEDT), ripping roofs from houses and uprooting trees.

Ambulance Victoria says a man in his 50s was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with head, pelvic and abdominal injuries, while another man in his 50s was flown to the Alfred Hospital with serious head injuries.

Spokesman Paul Bentley says another man, who suffered spinal injuries when a tree fell on his vehicle, will be taken to Melbourne this morning.

"The sorts of injuries we've seen have ranged from serious head injuries, spinal injuries and fractures to cuts and bruising, so far paramedics have treated 20 people and taken them to hospital," he said.

"There's obviously the possibility with daylight that more people may come forward with injuries."

Tim Wiebusch from Victoria's State Emergency Service says several people were hit by flying debris.

"It's people that have been hit by flying objects, partial internal ceiling collapses of roofs, and we've had reports of trees coming down on cars and the like as well," he said.

"So certainly very extreme conditions in that area as a result of that tornado-like activity."

Buildings in Rutherglen's historic main street were severely damaged, with awnings ripped off and windows smashed.

The Murray Valley Highway at Bundalong was also closed for several hours after massive trees along a large stretch of the road were ripped to pieces.

'Buildings, homes demolished'

Police Sergeant David Arnold says the damage is quite severe.
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?

Shouldn't have sown the wind, Ozzies.

I'm determined that we will move to a house with a basement or a room that can be adapted to be a shelter. I'd pay for that modification myself.

Must be lots of gayists in Victoria. Everyone knows that's what causes tornados. That and teh Jooz. And mixed-marriage. And some other stuff that god don't like. :tea:

They don't have to be in Victoria. God's aim isn't all that good. Gay marriage in California caused Hurricane Katrina.

Predicting isolated tornadoes here. Therapy has been suggested to get them to get out and socialize.

Jim may not believe this, but here in NZ, we got a drought. This is the driest summer since WWII.

I haven't had any rain that stay unevaporated more than 30 seconds since December. My two rain water tanks are down to one quarter of their capacity, which is about 3 weeks supply. We need rain!
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

It's been very dry in southern Oz too, while Queensland and coastal NSW have had bucket loads of rain!

Our tanks could certainly use filling as well! (we're on mains water, but use the tanks to flush the toilet and water the garden)
