The Orbit (London)

Post by Rum » Sat Jun 16, 2012 8:11 pm

Here it is. Apparently a 'work of art'. Paid for by an Indian steel mogul and designed by a famous artist Anish Kapoor.

Now I am really very open to abstract art and will gladly go along with really out there stuff in an attempt to understand the artist's intentions (if he or she isn't simply taking the piss), but I am struggling with this one.

Incidentally it is linked to the Olympics, regeneration, Boris Johnston etc.

Thoughts?

(Image edited and replaced as the one I posted initially was an artist's impression).

It is meant to look unstable and very antsy apparently.

..and actually the picture is of an impression. There were quite a few compromises for health and safety etc. Editing the pic for the actual thing.

If by "unstable and antsy" they mean "like a heap of ugly scrap," then mission accomplished!

Apparently the 'process of designing, negotiating the politics and bureaucracy and the technical challenges' were all part of the exercise and artistic in themselves. :ddpan:

I like it. I never expect public art to have any kind of meaning... it's usually decoration, not social commentary.

To me it's hard to judge something of that scale since it doesnt impress on screen. Sort of like looking at postcard of the Eiffel Tower doesn't really impress you with it's physical presence. I kinda like the form and colour though and it's certainly an interesting feat, but frankly it looks like ikea's version of a helter skelter, which would be called, what Kuurli Sliid?

It's art if someone says it is, apparently.
