Convincing People that Guns Are Bad, M'Kay.

Post by Coito ergo sum » Mon Mar 19, 2012 3:50 pm

Breitbart.com has uncovered video from 1995 of then-U.S. Attorney Eric Holder announcing a public campaign to "really brainwash people into thinking about guns in a vastly different way."
Holder was addressing the Woman's National Democratic Club. In his remarks, broadcast by CSPAN 2, he explained that he intended to use anti-smoking campaigns as his model to "change the hearts and minds of people in Washington, DC" about guns.
"What we need to do is change the way in which people think about guns, especially young people, and make it something that's not cool, that it's not acceptable, it's not hip to carry a gun anymore, in the way in which we changed our attitudes about cigarettes."
http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government ... Cigarettes

Yes, let us use the cigarette strategy to make people not want guns anymore, just like they don't want cigarettes anymore. Of course, 20% of adult Americans smoke now, so, if all goes well, in 50 years we can expect only 1 in 5 Americans to own guns. That'll safen everything up fer sure.

Sounds like a step in the right direction to me. Some people's brains could a little washin'.
I don't see where the scandal is in this.

Why is this relevant now - it's from 1995, unless it's a smokin' gun?

That might not be the worst idea.

I like what Chris Rock once said on the subject: "You want to cut down on crime and gun violence? Make every bullet cost one thousand dollars. There'd be no more stray bullets flying through the city, no more school schootings, no more bullets hitting innocent people anywhere. Somebody turns up dead with two shots in his head - you just know he did something to bring that on."

Breitbart discovered the video, and I'm sure they thought it would be scandalous because of the use of the word brainwashin'. I guess the identity of those in need of 'washin' might be up for debate, depending on who you talk to.

Posted it because I thought the idea of modeling anti-gun movements over anti-smoking movements to be kind of laughable.

This might effect accuracy and save lives by accident? People would be more wary of shooting a round if they knew the barrel might blow up in their face? :smoke:

Exactly! Model the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms after the FDA. Create a set of onerous regulations that require ATF approval for all ammunition, resulting in a 10-year average time frame from submission to the ATF to market approval, which costs an average of $1 billion per product, and then we can have outrageous mark-ups!

...I love it when a plan comes together...

If bullets were taken off the market I could get more within half an hours, as many as I could carry. And they'd be made by guys who expect to use them to defend against hordes of starving city folks WTSHTF, so they'd be good quality.

And, if there ever is that big disaster those folks are preparing for, they will be proven correct. The city folk who were ripping them before will be demanding that the country-folk not be selfish, and hand over necessaries to the city-folk. 'course...the really big guns and tanks and stuff will be in the hands of the army which will be controlled by the city folk, so the country folk will discover that they're fucked again in any case.

These two have been preparing for the Apocalypse since 1975. I call their place "Cheyenne Mountain East."
