Born again Buddists
I was watching compass a show in Australia about religion and the alike made by our aunty (ABC). It is a fascinating show however this one i tried not to laugh its about how parents are trying to get there children to be recognised as reincarnates of *insert revered person* so they can get donations and the alike. I think its child abuse and i shouldn't laugh but its that absurd and taken seriously that the parliament of bhutan actually wasted time trying to regulate something that is a bunch woo-poo you'd think they would have better things to do but yeah...
Here is a summary of the doco http://www.abc.net.au/compass/s2619290.htm
and later in the week you should be able to watch it online for free at http://www.abc.net.au/iview/

Funny. The Sutta Pitaka says there's no soul and ultimately not even a self in the first place to be reincarnated. Wonder what gets reincarnated in that deal?
Reincarnation is from Hinduism. Rebirth is Buddhist. What's rebirth?

Whatever you do now will become one of several conditions that will result in the arising of a future phenomenon. That's all there is to Buddhist rebirth. All this other crap is just so much

Without a self in the first place, it's impossible for such a "reincarnation" to happen, but Mahayanists in particular have hijacked early Buddhist doctrine and polluted it with elements that are more acceptable to Hinduists (Nagarjuna, et al) Theravadins aren't quite innocent, either, though. Seems there's hardly any limit to the bullshit people will come up with to satisfy their desires for the impossible (immortality).II. The Doctrine
Rebirth Is Not Transmigration
1. Translated from the Milindapañha (7116)
SAID the king: “Bhante Ngasena, does rebirth take place without anything transmigrating [passing over]?” 1
“Yes, your majesty. Rebirth takes place without anything transmigrating.” 2
“How, bhante Ngasena, does rebirth take place without anything transmigrating? Give an illustration.” 3
“Suppose, your majesty, a man were to light a light from another light; pray, would the one light have passed over [transmigrated] to the other light?” 4
“Nay, verily, bhante.” 5
“In exactly the same way, your majesty, does rebirth take place without anything transmigrating.” 6
“Give another illustration.” 7
“Do you remember, your majesty, having learnt, when you were a boy, some verse or other from your professor of poetry?” 8
“Yes, bhante.” 9
“Pray, your majesty, did the verse pass over [transmigrate] to you from your teacher?” 10
“Nay, verily, bhante.” 11
“In exactly the same way, your majesty, does rebirth take place without anything transmigrating.” 12
“You are an able man, bhante Ngasena.”
Whatever you do now will become one of several conditions that will result in the arising of a future phenomenon. That's all there is to Buddhist rebirth. All this other crap is just so much

Very interesting FBM i always thought like christianity being an offshot of judaism that Buddhism started as offshoot of hinduism not that hinduism had being thrown into the mix.FBM wrote:Funny. Re: Born again Buddists
Apparently, Buddha tried to be as syncretic as possible, but some bullshit (like transmigration/reincarnation) was just too...bullshit, so he had to nix it. Just about everybody (including shitloads of Buddhists, and even some Buddhist monastics) still associates reincarnation with Buddhism, though.Mr Bouquet wrote:Very interesting FBM i always thought like christianity being an offshot of judaism that Buddhism started as offshoot of hinduism not that hinduism had being thrown into the mix.

True that!Mr Bouquet wrote:This buddha bloke sounds like he had his head rather screwed on for a theist. No worries mate will do, i watched it and believe me there is alot of facepalm going on including Richard Gere recieving a blessing from one of these "trulkus" and the obvious training of some of the children by parents much like the buddhist version of the pushy parent who wants there kid to be famous et al.
A minor distinction on the 'theist' part, tho. He paid lip service to the prevailing belief in demi-gods, but flipped the spectrum and subordinated them to humans. No creator/sky puppet/Brahma or anything of the sort. Th' more ya know, eh?
