Affect and effect

Post by Pappa » Thu Sep 29, 2011 10:41 am

I'm sure I get them wrong every time. I've checked the meanings and usages dozens of times but it never sinks in. :lay:

Yeah always a difficult one.

When I try and check the meaning I usually don't understand the difference in the explanation - or it sort of doesn't relate to how I'm using it or something.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

It doesn't help that both can be used as either nouns or verbs.

Affects affect people and other beings. Think of it as the root of 'affection'. It doesn't make sense to say 'the earthquake affected the city greatly' but it does to say 'the earthquake affected their lives'. Affection is based on emotion and changes to it. Effects alter our world like lighting effects which change the appearance of a room.

Carrying Ani's thoughts on:

"Affection" and "Effective" would be good mnemonics.

See - used like this I have no idea which is right or wrong - and I can't work it out based on any explanations.

Using Ani's explanation you can work it out pretty easily, for instance: What I do has an affect on people, the effects of which may vary.

I hereby coin the word: "Æffect"
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I think that's the problem. I forget because I know one of them (effect) also means to cause something to come into being as a verb.

Yes, but the majority of the time affect is a verb, effect is a noun. There are exceptions, but if you're unsure it's a good rule of thumb.
