Banned names?

So I was sitting on the bog reading the latest copy of Mojo, the cover story of which is about the Ramones and I suddenly found myself wondering when the idea of a group of people playing music together collectively should actually require a name started. I mean why? And when did it start I wonder?

Don't know but I suppose it happened because of the massive surge in numbers of performers in the early half of the 20th century although may have happened before. How do you tell the difference between hundreds and then thousands. I mean before then there were maybe a hundred composers active world wide at any time, and the orchestra really were just paid musicians not artists as such, if you see what I mean.

As for banned names I think Blowbarb Mabubin Mingewank is going to far, but then I am fairly liberal.

Or maybe CUNT because Radio stations would have an apoplectic fit.

Some names are really bad though.

Yeah like we were called plang its from an old play by Chekov, but we decided Chekov was a bit depressing and so we changed it to I Just Got Spanked by Jesus which is the last line of an oft overlooked work called What I Did This Summer by Kafka, and we thought Checkov quotes were a bit pretentious 'cause were real and edgy so we went for something post modern and ironic.

Massive surge in performers? I can't help but think that there were probably even more individual and small groups of performers before the early half of the 20th century -back in the time when music never got recorded so every time music was playing, musicians were playing it.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I'm assuming that once there were two orchstras in the same city, they'd have to choose a name that identifies them more uniquely.
