No teachers, no homework: Students set own agenda at private school in Davie
I am generally skeptical of this kind of thing.
One, no homework? In my view, that's a mistake. Kids need to learn to do homework early and often. It becomes vital later in their studies. One can't learn complex mathematics, physics, biology, or chemistry without doing homework. The elimination of homework is a big red flag for me, indicating that the program isn't very effective.
Two, students set own agenda? Really? So what if that agenda means a class full of 8 year olds fall behind a year in some subjects? They like reading or art more than numbers, so we'll just lave grade 3 math for next year?
However, the article points out that 80% of Sudbury graduates get into their first choice of college, and the mother quoted in the article seems quite happy with it.
I'm wondering though - with a tuition of almost $7000 a year -- that's not exactly for the disadvantaged. I wonder how many of the students have stay-at-home parents who focus daily on education, in addition to the school.
If it works, it works. Although, eventually, standardized testing seems unavoidable in life - like once the get to college - suddenly - there's homework, and standardized tests....don't they need practice for that?
Of course they're little, not college students.
