Any Kids' School Project Ideas?

Post by Bella Fortuna » Thu Sep 09, 2010 3:19 am

Junior F has a school health fair in a couple of weeks and we have to do some sort of health-related project (a report, poster, and/or experiment.)

Any ideas for something fun, interesting, or unusual that wouldn't be too much work considering the time frame :shifty: and that wouldn't be either shut down by the health department or by a mob of angry offended parents? :awesome:

I can't seem to find anything that sparks his interest. :lay:

How about a poster highlighting the adverse effects that insufficient sleep can have on a person's mental and physical health?

I'm not sure why I thought of this idea...

Damn. I was just about to refer you to the 'ladie's finger up yer bum' thread. Never mind.

What about a Myth Busters theme? There are loads of health fads to pick from, he could use reasoning, experiment and knowledge of science. Do you know the tv series?

I do, but haven't seen it in ages as I don't have cable. Anyway - nice idea, if I can find something to debunk that's pretty simple. (I should have put his age and grade down - he's 11, in 6th grade)

A great idea, but it may be beyond what we can get into given the limited time frame and what he'd be able to comprehend and explain to others...

How about making ice cream in plastic bags? (I know the trick if you don't)

He could show how healthy home-made ice-cream can be beside the list of awful ingredients on the store-boughten...

If I remember being 11 correctly age limited ability much less than boredom! What's he into? Bugs? Sports? Bikes?

On a slighty side note i've felt strongly for a number of years that the workings of peer review should be taught at 11 - or whenever a country's ed system starts to introduce seperate sciences. Without understanding peer review the why of experiments makes little sense when related to medicine, engineering, even bloody gravity!

He could test the efficacy of homeopathic remedies. He could make a poster that shows how much active ingredient there is in the average homeopathic pill (using some clever molar volumey stuff), and how much of the "water that has a memory" is in the average homeopathic pill (which is a dry object) and conclude...

Can you get some teeth somewhere (pigs teeth from a butchers?) - you could dunk them in cola / soft drink / coffee / tea / water for a few weeks in glass jars (altering the time intervals could be a nice variable) and see if there is any dissolution/discolouring etc. Compared with a "virgin" tooth this could give insights onto the effect of various drinks (acids) on teeth... If you wanted to take it further, you could flouridise some of the teeth (ie brush them with fluoride toothpaste) as a comparison group (and water / unbrushed / brushed as controls)...
