Neighbourhood comes together to kick out religious bigots!

Post by Link » Tue Aug 24, 2010 8:40 am

A Toronto neighbourhood banded together to get rid of a church group that has been loudly reading babble passages outside a gay couple's house for the past 7 years.
Blurb from under video below:
This is a group from a church at the end of my street. Apparently they have been grouping in front of a couple's house and reading their bible loudly for the past 7 years. They may have also driven another couple from the area as well by doing the same thing. Tonight most of our neighbours came out and were successful in getting them to leave. The people who go to that church don't even live in our area! Police came by shortly thereafter.

In the UK, they could be arrested and charged with harassment the second time it was reported to the police. I've never heard it happening to religious nuts, but I'm pretty sure it would happen.

If I got regular calls from JWs or other door-to-door religious folk, I'd quite like to see if our pretty flexible harassment laws could be used on them.

The principle's pretty simple. If someone does something to you that makes you feel harassed, you report it to the police and if they are satisfied you really were harassed they inform the harasser of that fact and that if they do it again they will be committing a criminal offence.

I would love to see them try that in my neighbourhood the kids would heckle them into tears and the adults would set the dogs on them . They wouldn't be driving away either

More Presumptuous Harassment by Religious Nutjobs

Torontoist posted this video of a prayer group from Highfield Road Gospel Hall in the Dundas and Greenwood area of Toronto that apparently prays outside the homes of regularly harasses gay and lesbian couples.

The videographer, resident Geoffrey Skelding, writes:

"This is a group from a church at the end of my street. Apparently they have been grouping in front of a gay couple's house and reading their bible loudly for the past 7 years. They may have also driven a lesbian couple from the area as well by doing the same thing. Tonight most of our neighbours came out and were successful in getting them to leave. The people who go to that church don't even live in our area! Police came by shortly thereafter."

Says one worshiper in the clip: "We have an authority to preach the gospel. We've been doing this seven years."

In the street, in the US, they would probably be allowed to do that. I think it would only be harrassment if they did that on private property. Just look at what Fred Phelps and his gang gets away with.

I agree though, why did it take them that long to do something about it? I would have been blasting some heavy metal at them the first day.

SEVN YEARS? In three days I could have had them stop.

And move to a different town.

In Africa.

If there had been a few of us guys living in that neighbourhood those bigots would have been out of there within 7 minutes never mind 7 years.
“I wish no harm to any human being, but I, as one man, am going to exercise my freedom of speech. No human being on the face of the earth, no government is going to take from me my right to speak, my right to protest against wrong, my right to do everything that is for the benefit of mankind. I am not here, then, as the accused; I am here as the accuser of capitalism dripping with blood from head to foot.”

Just a guess, but from a comment made by one of the bible bashers ("We'll be back again next year.") this intrusion may be a once a year event.
