Why should you get back pay? You aren't working, so you aren't owed anything. Besides, you work, or don't work, (as a public employee) at the pleasure of the People, and not a moment longer. If we decide you need to take an unpaid vacation, then you take an unpaid vacation. If you bitch about it we'll fire your ass and find someone else to do your job who better understands what the word "public servant" means.

Don't know the difference between an hourly employee and a salaried employee? Don't understand the value of what we do, or the cost of not paying people and expecting them to shrug and say "oh well, I'm a public servant"? C'mon Seth - surely you understand the concept of maintaining expertise, or at least the notion of cause-and-effect.

EDIT: to be a bit more specific, we're not being temporarily fired, we're being placed on administrative leave. Same thing as taking a vacation - should salaried employees not get paid when we take one of those, either? I'm still on call - if an emergency erupts my boss can have me come in, with a little bit of paperwork.

Er, well, not true. The US Gov classes certain jobs as "Essential". Meaning, even if we go into a shutdown furlough, you show up and put your work in. You'll get back pay when we get the budget sorted.

I think essential services get paid regardless, and the people who write the checks are considered essential for that reason. The Mayor of DC has had the gall to declare EVERYONE in city employment an "essential employee," which may get him hit with a felony rap because it's a felony to pay government money for other than essential services during a shutdown.

Actually, if I'm going to give charity to anyone, it'll be panhandlers and the like. They are living the American Dream. They idle about all day, drink Thunderbird and ask people to give them money. What ethically and morally distinguishes them from the government, and armed robbers, is that they ASK for money and don't stick a gun in your face if you don't give it to them. They live free, they owe nobody, they take nothing other than what they are freely given, and they pay no taxes.

Beats the shit out of the slum dwellers who use government proxy thugs in jackboots to extract money from people by force to support their lifestyle.

Direct donation to the needy is always the best use of your charity. All charitable organizations do is skim 30 percent or more off the top and then misadminister the rest. When I give, I give directly and 100% of the gift goes to the needy person, with no skimming by government or anyone else.
