A Republican legislator in Maine who lost his wife to COVID-19 last week appeared at a rally on Tuesday that featured a GOP colleague who compared the state’s Democratic governor to a Nazi doctor who performed deadly experiments on Jews during the Holocaust.
State Rep. Chris Johansen, who emerged in the early days of the pandemic as a fierce opponent of public health-related restrictions, joined a group of lawmakers at the event in Augusta. State Rep. Heidi Sampson delivered a speech to the crowd that baselessly accused Gov. Janet Mills, who has introduced a vaccine mandate for health-care workers, of operating a government campaign to test “experimental” vaccines on unknowing citizens.
She described Mills as the “reincarnated” Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, who performed deadly experiments on Jewish people in Auschwitz death camps during the Holocaust.
“Do I need to remind you of the late 1930s and into the 40s in Germany. And the experiments with Josef Mengele,” Sampson said according to a video from the event posted online. “What was it? A shot. And these were crimes against humanity. And what came out of that? The Nuremberg Code. The Nuremberg Trial. Informed consent is at the top and violating that is punishable by death.”
She also compared vaccine mandates to the Tuskegee syphilis experiment on Black men. Sampson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

The mind state of such people must share many similarities with the seriously deluded who belong to fundamentalist religions.

Tennessee radio host doubted and mocked vaccines – now he has Covid
A conservative radio host in Tennessee who urged listeners not to get vaccinated against Covid-19 has changed track and called on listeners to get the shot, after contracting the virus and ending up in hospital in “very serious condition”.
In a statement posted to social media, Phil Valentine’s family detailed his condition and said: “Please continue to pray for his recovery and PLEASE GO GET VACCINATED!”
The family also said the WTN host had “never been an ‘anti-vaxer’”, but “regrets not being more vehemently ‘pro-vaccine’ and looks forward to being able to more vigorously advocate that position as soon as he is back on the air, which we all hope will be soon”.
Valentine, 61, did, however, play down the need for vaccines and perform a song called Vaxman, to the tune of Taxman, George Harrison’s Beatles number against government taxation.
“Let me tell you how it will be,” he sang, “and I don’t care if you agree, ‘Cause I’m the Vaxman, yeah I’m the Vaxman. If you don’t like me coming round, be thankful I don’t hold you down.”
As the Delta variant of the coronavirus fuels steep rises in cases across the US, rural and mostly Republican-run states trail in vaccination numbers and have emerged as hotspots for infection, straining health resources.

My current county (Sarasota) is at 73% vaccination rates, probably because we're mostly old farts. But we're heading up to the new condo in Cedar Key, in Levy county, it's only at 48%. If we die it's been a pleasure knowing all y'all. Statewide we're at 66% vaccinated. One of my idiot nephews refused to get vaccinated because Big Gummint, he's got a nasty case now.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

We've been lucky so far. Even with multiple exposures all kiddos tested negative.
Why is it taking so long to approve the vaccine for kids anyway?

I was given a year of free milkshakes once. The year passed and I hadn’t bothered to get even one.

Well duh.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Do any of you believe in choice around this choice?
How about choice in whether to disclose your vaccine status?
Just wondering if anyone is NOT authoritarian about this...

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
I'm not, I oppose any mandates, vaccines, masks, lockdowns, whatever. But I live in a country without universal healthcare, so it's no skin off my tax ass if an unvaccinated idiot ends up on a vent. Well, it is, but not to the point it would be under universal healthcare. If you can afford it, go for it. That said, if an unvaccinated idiot is taking up an ICU bed and I need it because I have a heart attack or even if I get covid, they need to turf his or her or their ass out and put me in there. Your choice, your risk, but don't make it my problem.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Why would they even be IN that bed, unless your medical system is already socialized. (I think it IS)
If it isn't socialized, then they paid for the bed. Pay more if you want them turfed, I guess.
Socialism is pretty nice, in my estimation, except one must pay attention to where they cut off. If they feed everyone, great. If they feed everyone except those people, it isn't socialism, it seems to be something else.
Ditto for health care, etc. Ditto for choice in general, now that I think of it.
Are socialists in favour of individuals seizing the means of decision-making?
