George Lakoff, retired UC Berkeley professor and author of Don’t Think of an Elephant, is one of a very few people in Berkeley who does not underestimate Donald Trump. “Trump is not stupid,” he tells anyone who will listen. “He is a super salesman, and he knows how to change your brain and use it to his advantage.”
In fact, Lakoff predicted a year ago that Trump would win with 47% of the vote. (The actual total was 46%.) Lakoff even told Hillary Clinton’s campaign and PAC staffers how to counteract Trump’s message. But they couldn’t hear him.

Trump has peasant cunning, and is the master of the art of ripping people he deals with off by declaring bankruptcy. Neither skills are to be underestimated, but that does not make him a smart person. He definitely is not a super salesman. Too many of his marketing campaigns, such as his university and his steaks, were utter failures. If he were even a moderately successful salesman he would not have turned a casino, which started off as a two billion dollar asset, into a one billion dollar liability in twelve months. Salesmen are supposed to turn a profit from their offerings.

That's where his peasant cunning comes in. People don't need to be smart to be highly successful. No contradiction there. We've had a Prime Minister like that fairly recently.

I'm going to assume he fluked until I see evidence otherwise. There's no way he could have imagined that he would ever appeal to the common man. He saw chaos, wanted power to satisfy his narcissism, and took advantage of it. I will grant the MAGA tagline as very good. Who came up with it? Him or one of his flunkies?
