I don't get why this is a difficult topic for some people to get their head around. Clothing in many workplaces are costume. It really doesn't matter what the costume is as long as there is a cultural consensus that the costume is. There are many reasons for these costumes, from health and safety to archaic pomp, to signifiers of wealth, of professionalism, of length of service. So for many people costume is part of the role of the job.

The current consensus expects people to dress in specific ways, because the costume is often part of the job, it, in the case of larger concerns reflects their public image. If the police were all walking about wearing tiny denim shorts and wore horned helmets, people would be upset, but if we lived in a society where that was a signifier for "security" then such a costume would be valid for the police. To argue that these costumes should be the same forever or should be lax is missing the point. The cloth is irrelevant to the consensual agreement that it still signifies professionalism.

Some places and bosses may be more rigid than others. I'd imagine there are undertakers who would assume a pastel blue suit and zany tie from a warner bros store was inappropriate and there is at least one who targets a market where that would be suitable. If the latter proves more popular, the style will change.

I wish they would come back into style, men look good in a smart suit and tie. I don't watch Mad Men, but I catch bits and pieces and the men always look so well dressed, I like it.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.
