It is interesting...and exactly what I was getting at when I continued with my posts. There are some ways of parenting that are superior to others. Whether they are more culturally engrained in one culture or the other is irrelevant, what's important is that they are recognized and employed when applicable, not just immediately discarded because "that's not how we do things here".hadespussercats wrote:I forget if I posted this link: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/19/opini ... wanted=all

In Blighty, we much prefer animals to children, which is why our childcare facilities are so expensive and crappy. There was a brief period, maybe 6-9 months, when both the MHs were at nursery and the monthly fee was considerably more than our mortgage. It's ok, mind, I'm going to subtract if from their pocket money.

Haha, it would have been cheaper to send them to prison.

Exactly why we should be careful not to instill too much self control, in my opinion. Intelligence is so much more important than academic achievement.Indeed, childhood self-control is twice as important as intelligence in predicting academic achievement.
Granted the ADD induced by excessive carbohydrate intake can be problematic.
I haven't read the whole article, but the first few paragraphs sound kind of like the article on French children - sort of a self congratulatory description of one particular way to raise American children.
