Got €35 shop credit for Black Ops and Vanquish was on sale for €17.98, brand new, leaving me €17.02 up

There's a happy ending to Black Ops after all.

I read that Mass Effect was finally coming out for PS3. Think I may give it a go. It's good, right? :ask:
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Mass Effect isn't ever coming out on the PS3, but Mass Effect 2 has just been released and all systems will apparently get Mass Effect 3 in the winter (but I think it will be pushed into 2012). If you get the PS3 version of MS2, the story of the first game will be explained.

If you've played other Bioware RPGs, you know what to expect. Brilliant characters, big story, ability to make choices that influence how your character develops, high production values. The PS3 version comes with all the extra DLC that 360 owners had to pay for. It's far from being a perfect game, but I've bought it twice now, so I clearly enjoyed it. The game missions involve you running about and shooting things, but everything else involves talking to other characters. This is the best bit though, because the characters and voice acting are amazing (with the notable exception of the male protagonist which is absolutely fucking terrible - fortunately you can play as female with a great voice actress). Loads of big names doing the voices, from Martin Sheen to Carrie-Anne Moss.

It's really ambitious. A big space opera involving traveling from galaxy to galaxy and building a team for a suicide mission. Similar to Heavy Rain (well, not to the same extent), the small choices you make don't radically change the game, but they make it just that tiny bit more personal. It's YOUR game. On that note, if you get MS3 (the final game) when it is released, your save game from MS2 will be imported to the new game and much of the new game will be directly influenced by your choices from the previous.

It's like a sci-fi movie. It's shooting and talking. The characters pull you in. There are loads of references to the first game (and old characters returning) that you might not appreciate, but the story works even if this is your first time. Watch some Youtube reviews just to see what the gameplay looks like.

Oh, and it looks much better on the PS3. It's actually a different engine.

Peter got it right, sort of. It's an interactive movie - not a video game. I didn't care for the first one, didn't bother playing the second one. I found it to be linear (in every sense), predictable, and the parts where you do actually 'play' were tedious. It would have made a descent B-film, but it makes for a lousy game. IMHO of course.
In this world there's two kinds of people: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig.

When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk.

Happy Trails. :)

So here's the update on Vanquish. I've got used to the controls now so I'm not just getting gunned down like Burmese rioters.
Do you remember that old game MDK, it was a really simple game but if was frickin' awesome?
That's what this game is like. Just pure, enjoyable, destructive, high-octane mayhem. The control system is actually sweet. Getting used to having to use an extra finger on the top didn't take as long as I thought (luckily it's the left hand, it's easier to have control over, think playing guitar). You can dash from cover to cover taking out waves of bad guys. There's some cool slow mo' stuf, too.
Best of all this game has no story (I mean, it does, but...). Not that I don't mind a story, there's a time and place for it, but sometimes you want less yap and more action.
Just restarted it on normal, I can take the stabilizers off now. Leaving in a few mins but will get stuck in tomorrow.

Just wanted to point out that the second one shits all over the first. The original had its moments, but was mostly plagued with problems. Pacing issues, shit transport part of the game, awful elevator scenes for loading screens, very flawed shooting mechanics and other general bugs and glitches. A bit like the Assassins Creed series, the sequel fixes most of the major issues that stopped the first from being a great game.

The story is linear, but you choose the order of events and exactly how you get to the end. It's linear like GTA or RDR is linear, assuming you're playing GTA/RDR for the story and not just fucking around for fun. Those games have more general freedom if you're just fucking around.

If you want some explosive non-stop action, with plenty of shooting, other games are definitely better.

Hell, I take it most of you have seen this (about fucking time):

Mass Effect is basically the opposite of this.

Ani, have you played Dead Space?

The second one comes out on Friday and I actually can't wait. Dead Space was one of my favourite games in the past few years and from the demo this one looks just as good.

I've a LAN party coming up with a bunch of mates this weekend and the specs are all over the shop so I've been going back in time to find good games that will be fairly cross-compatible. It's been an awesome trip :) I've come across a crapload of awesome old games and some of them aren't even too shoddy looking!

CoD 1 & 2, Half-Life with Opposing Force and Blue Shift, CounterStrike, Age of Empires 3, Star Wars Battlefront I and II, Alpha Centauri... so many awesome games :)

I also just re-discovered the sheer jaw-dropping awesomeness of Half-Life 2 and Portal, it's been a good few weeks!
