It's interesting that a swathe of fairly standard, mildly progressive, old-fashioned liberal ideas about the nature of man, society and the universe are now cast as indoctrinaire orthodoxy...

Can we have the gator snacks and Jimmy Buffett without the war on education?

‘The water is coming’: Florida Keys faces stark reality as seas rise

"elevate streets" you are fucking joking.Officials prepare to elevate streets despite financial shortfalls, amid recognition that not every home can be saved
Long famed for its spectacular fishing, sprawling coral reefs and literary residents such as Ernest Hemingway, the Florida Keys is now acknowledging a previously unthinkable reality: it faces being overwhelmed by the rising seas and not every home can be saved.
Following a grueling seven-hour public meeting on Monday, held in the appropriately named city of Marathon, officials agreed to push ahead with a plan to elevate streets throughout the Keys to keep them from perpetual flooding, while admitting they do not have the money to do so.
The string of coral cay islands that unspool from the southern tip of Florida finds itself on the frontline of the climate crisis, forcing unenviable choices upon a place that styles itself as sunshine-drenched idyll. The lives of Keys residents – a mixture of wealthy, older white people, the one in four who are Hispanic or Latino, and those struggling in poverty – face being upended.
If the funding isn’t found, the Keys will become one of the first places in the US – and certainly not the last – to inform residents that certain areas will have to be surrendered to the oncoming tides.
“The water is coming and we can’t stop it,” said Michelle Coldiron, mayor of Monroe county, which encompasses the Keys. “Some homes will have to be elevated, some will have to be bought out. It’s very difficult to have these conversations with homeowners, because this is where they live. It can get very emotional.”

Miami building collapse leaves 99 people unaccounted for says on the link above. Proceeds to say it resembles 9/11. But if you know your world news you can see it is a substandard building material collapse that often happens in any third world country. I say it resembles Bangladesh.

In California you go mountain biking and you get some scrapes, bruises, maybe even a broken bone. Go mountain biking in Florida and you get eaten by a fucking dinosaur.

A nice lady I knew who did her run training in Alaska, noted that she would ride a bike to support her honey, while 'packing', as the kids say. Then hubby would ride/cover while she ran.
When the 'normal' hazard is a grizzly, the sidearm is a weight worth splitting. It's hard for me to run with my camera, and that rides in the center, mostly.

I'd rather say armored, but given the climate, that would be inviting heatstroke.

https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/fl ... story.html‘Have him die somewhere else!’ Florida homeowners scream as lawn worker tries to save man’s life
When a lawn-care worker saw a neighbor having a seizure in his car and begged for help as the victim convulsed, Florida homeowners screamed at them to “Get off our lawn,” deputies said Thursday.
The good Samaritan, identified only as “Tony,” recognized the victim, knew where he lived, and ran to his house to alert his wife Monday, the The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.
The department called Tony a hero and credited his quick actions with saving the driver’s life.
When the neighbors screamed “Get the man out of here … have him die somewhere else,” it was a “sad moment for Tony, but he kept at it,” the department posted on its Facebook page.We want to take a moment to recognize this local HERO. Many of us have seen Tony pushing his lawnmower around the...

Tony, who’s often seen pushing his lawnmower in the neighborhood, saw the emergency as he was on Dunes Road in Palm Beach Gardens, in a neighborhood with many modest, midcentury ranch homes.
“Without thinking twice, Tony ran up to the rolling car on and grabbed the fender to try and stop it from rolling down the street further,” the sheriff’s office said. “It ran over Tony’s foot, but thankfully he had steel-toe boots on.”
When the car, with windows up and doors locked, ended up on the unhelpful neighbors’ lawn, Tony begged and screamed for help to no avail.
When the victim recovered, he asked the sheriff’s office for Tony’s phone number so he could call and thank him.
He met up with Tony on Wednesday and gave him a big hug.
The sheriff’s office said there was no incident report and that all the information had been relayed by a local resident.
“This event occurred without the knowledge of PBSO,” Teri Barbera, the department’s public information officer, wrote in an email to the Orlando Sentinel. “We received a kind letter from a resident in the Cabana Colony neighborhood and thought it was a great story to share.”
