Re: So.... Seen Any Good Movies Lately?
Finally saw Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World today.
8/10
Wildly original, while somehow referencing almost every nerdy film I've every seen or heard of. The edits, the CGI, the choreography, the bizarre attitude, it all works beautifully. The film is fairly well-cast, too, which is unusual for films like this. But there aren't any films like this one.
The two points I knocked off here:
1. Michael Cera. Sorry. Love ya, bro, but what Edgar Wright and his casting directors were thinking is beyond me. Is Scott Pilgrim a total loser? Then why is he the greatest fighter that ever lived? It must have something to do with the universe Scott Pilgrim lives in, and Michael Cera just didn't fit there.
2. This movie is supposed to be the ultimate nerdgasm. The gift from on high to geeks everywhere. But strangely, almost nothing in the film is ever explained. I cannot think of any sort of film analysis that I more closely associate with nerds and geeks than the time-honored tradition of dissecting how someone got their powers, how they lost them, who would have won in a fight between this guy and that guy, if only those two had fought, etc. etc. The film rushes along at breakneck speed, and never stops to feed the nerds their precious detailed-explanations. With one exception. For whatever reason, Brandon Routh's character's super-power is explained, and explained, and explained ad nauseum.
Beautiful film. Truly original. Could have been legendary.

Did not see this lately, but would just love to see it again: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.
A very original and weird version of Hamlet, with superb actors & actresses.
Anyone else here seen it?

"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." - Maureen J

One of my favorites. Young Tim Roth and Gary Oldman =Ronja wrote:Did not see this lately, but would just love to see it again: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.

Just saw "Dreamland" yesterday. Almost cult-movie quality. The counterman was really good, which made the other actors look that much worse. (It's a Netflix "instant watch" if you're looking for something funky.)

Speaking of Tim Roth, I just watched Tim Burton's remake of Planet of the Apes. If you can ignore the plot holes and contrivances, it's an awesome film. The sets, the costumes, the music, and particularly the casting are all top-notch. Particularly strong performances from Helena Bonham-Carter, Paul Giamatti (who is fucking hilarious in his role), and Tim Roth. Tim Roth's performance here is intenserachelbean wrote:One of my favorites. People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

I watched "The Other" last night... pretty OK. No real surprises in it, though. John Ritter sure was cute when he was young.

O.k. - I saw that movie Eat, Pray Love a week or so ago, so now She Who Must Be Obeyed can probably be persuaded to see a non-chick-flick movie. Any suggestions?
