I sent my donation of $ 200 to the Red Cross for their Philippines appeal. People are starving in parts of that country due to the hurricane, and prompt aid will help a great deal.

Actually, Fakuname, the NZ Red Cross have guaranteed that no part of any donation will be used for anything other than aid to the Philippines. Administration costs, etc., will come out of their normal general fund.

I agree that some charities bleed off too much of any donation, but the Red Cross is generally pretty good at getting the funds to where it does the most good.

I sent £400 to a charity with no admin costs at all. Don't want my hard-earned being spent by do-gooders with any level of organisation.
