I really don't know what kind of reaction they were prepared for. It seems blatantly obvious to me what the reaction from a community would be to an abrupt shutdown of said community, especially since it was so large and seemed to be thriving. I have seen a disturbing trend, not just on RD.net, but Internet-wide and in other various media (video games, movies, and entertainment, etc.) of a move towards "managed content." Essentially the freedom once afforded to consumers of these various forms of media is continually squeezed by those who wish to profit on it in some way. Free flowing ideas and discussion, and uncontrolled consumption of media just isn't profitable anymore. When I say profit, I just don't mean money, but also power to control ideas and control the conversation.

There's also the classic "bait and switch" manoeuvre, where a website builds up a user base, then decides to start squeezing it in some way for some other purpose. Look at Facebook for the classic example of building a user base with a simple formula, then abusing it for cash. I'm not saying RD.net is doing this for cash, but the "managed content" meme has certainly worked its way through the management of that site.

That makes a lot of sense to me. Josh and others did not want an authentic, independent community, they wanted an "RD brand" site...

Which others? There was only one user posting anything remotely close to support for the change, so it seems limited to the two that signed the announcement, + Dawkins.

They were informed a while ago about possible and probable reactions from the membership if they just threw the forum away. They also experienced a bit of a rough ride from staff in the last few weeks so they knew that people would go bananas if they dumped the forum.
So they did it anyways, knowing full well what would happen.

Hey! Durro!

...about the game... (or is it a bad time right now?)
If you can get all 18 surviving players here, I'll restart the game here tomorrow from 7am with day round #2.

If not, we can start a new one (but not until later in the week) and have some Rationalia dudes join in. Oh wait, that would be us now. No more us and them. I always had a foot in both camps, but that's been taken away.

I'm open to suggestions re the Mafia Game. It was getting bloody interesting.
I'm all for this!

I know now's probably not the best time to be worrying about a game when our beloved(?) mod has got bigger things to worry about, but not knowing who killed me is just killing me! :lay:
If you start it, they will come If not let me know if you start a new game. Please. :td:

No, I completely understand. A lot of people just need a place to vent for now. And as far as I can tell the "New" and "Improved" RD.net won't really be a place people will feel they can participate in with any regularity. It's possible I am misinterpreting what Josh said in his announcement, but in sounds like they are going towards some kind of "fora" format where mods dictate just about everything that gets posted. While that format is fine for a new startup website (I've had a similar idea for a new website floating around in my head), it is a disaster for a website with such a huge and dedicated existing user base. Anyway, I am not telling anyone with a differing opinion to bugger off, I'm just saying the flavor of this forum is decidedly humanist in nature, leaning towards hedonism with a huge dash of chill pill. ;) This is not a place for polemicists, regardless of their ideology.
I don't think that a place has a personality but rather that it gets a hive personality from its members -or bettter- its posts.
I was not here by then, but If I understood it right, Ratz was/is an hedonistic place because it was the consequence of banning several hedonistic savory posts... But if we get polemicists members, or polemics and discussions predomine our posts, then for that time, this will be so. That's what makes it very exciting for me to see what will get to be the new collective personality...

Good morning everyone,

A lot of people already know that until yesterday I was a global moderator on RDF. I haven't managed to read all this thread, just the first few pages...

Anyway, I don't know if people do know, but Josh and Andrew have deleted the New Forum discussion, because both members and staff were very unhappy with the decision, and were speaking their minds. Also because of this they took the forum down last night.

The RDF staff had no idea what was going to happen; we only knew that there was going to be a new site, and nothing much else. We made a couple of threads in the moderator's subforum, trying to pitch on ideas about the new forum, what we would like to see and other similar things. We also tried telling Josh and Andrew what the forum community is. But they did not listen, I think they were even worse than creotards in that respect.

This is going to cost to the RDFRS cause a lot, and the fools do not understand it. I am sorry, but I will not be supporting it any more. The site techs and admins have shown that they do not respect the people that have contributed so much there. I am not going to get involved in the new sanitized and borged new area of theirs. I like the chaos and feel of forums, I like the live community of forums, the banter, the silly threads, the serious threads... After all I am human, and that's what a forum community is about: being human, being able to let go and many times say things you were not able to say in your every day life.

For me, the RD.net forum became over the 2 years I have been there, like a second home, somewhere where I could let off steam, I could talk to like-minded people, and more. It also was a place that helped me get through the first anniversary of my little sister's death, in 2008.

I am sorry that Josh and Andrew feel they had to axe the forum. I don't know why, and right now, I don't care why. All I care is that I am so angry and frustrated, and going totally in emotional circles. Because I had invested a lot of work in the forum, I knew certain areas of the forum quite well, and the community therein. A lot of people contributing hours in order to post a rebuttal to creationist posts, or to debunk alien conspiracy videos... Hours to write one essay for the science competition Mazille started, and more.

And all that for what? Just my rant... And I am ranting more on twitter and copying this to my blog...

PS. Looking for a blogger template: 3 columns, dark, something on the gothic vampire side, not very intricate but elegant. If anyone knows of a template like the above PM me. Thanks.

The new discussion area will not be a new forum. It will be different. We will be using a system of tags to categorize items, instead of sub-forums. Discussions can have multiple tags, such as "Education", "Children", and "Critical Thinking". Starting a new discussion will require approval, so we ask that you only submit new discussions that are truly relevant to reason and science. Subsequent responses on the thread will not need approval—however anything off topic or violating the new terms of service will be removed. The approval process will be there to ensure the quality of posts on the site. This is purely an editorial exercise to help new visitors find quality content quickly. We hope this discussion area will reflect the foundation's goals and values.
I see exactly what they are doing there. They are managing the content of the forum now to focus on the foundation's goals. I can understand it, but still disagree vehemently with the way they are going about it. I also take slight offense to the implication that users do not provide 'quality content.' People don't use discussion forums as an archive or scientific journal. Perhaps RD wants to focus his website in that direction, but the way they've gone about it is completely wrong and abuses the site's established user base.
