Watched Pompeii (2014) on Amazon Instant with a few cans. Rubbish movie which speeded up once the city had struck the volcano in the second hour and began to go crazy with special effects. Was on my third can on of Kronenburg which made it seem better than it was. The very definition of a special effects movie, even the sound of the constant sword fighting sounded stilted and artificial.
What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?

Argo. Okay but not as good as I was expecting given the fuss that was made over it.

Despicable Me 2. Painfully unfunny. Even worse than the first one, and I didn't think that was possible.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Not that incredible, actually. Just okay.

The Whistleblower. Not what I expected it to be based on the DVD cover but fairly decent anyway.

A Good Day to Die Hard. Well made and lots of fun. Critics hated it but that's because critics are gay. Great stunts with very little CGI, decent story, good acting, Willis his usual charming self. No masterpiece by any means but a good empty-headed action flick.

The Croods. Was not expecting this to be so good. Funny, charming, and very beautiful animation.

Epic. Speaking of beautiful animation, this one was gorgeous as well. Started off a little clunky but got better. The real star of the show was the three-legged pug. Also the slugs were funny. The fly with the short lifespan was a riot, too.

Robocop, Robocop 2, Robocop 3. First one was awesome, second one was cool, third was cheesy but still fun.

To Kill a Mockingbird. I really liked this. I was especially impressed by the performance of the young actress who played Scout, Atticus's daughter. I'll have to see if I can find the book at the library when I return the DVD.

Don't bother with the book. My cat read it. She found it profoundly disappointing.

John Rabe

Never heard the story before. wonder why all the Nanking movies lately.

Not a big fan of Steve Buscemi but he’s very good in this role…

MOVIE INFO
China was in flames when a German businessman became a reluctant hero. When the Imperial Japanese Army invaded China in 1937, attacking the civilian population of the capital Nanking with unprecedented inhumanity, John Rabe, manager of Siemens' China branch and a resident in the country for 27 years, took action. Along with a few other members of the foreign community including doctors and missionaries who remained in the city, and driven by simple humanitarian concerns, shock at the appalling behaviour of Germany's Asian ally, and a love for the country and people among whom he had worked for so long, he created a safety zone in which a quarter of a million civilians survived what was later to go down in history as the "Nanking Massacre.”

Her. Not quite as good as I was expecting but I still liked it. I wished Chris Pratt had the lead role, though, instead of a supporting role. Quite a lot of time was spent staring at Joaquin Phoenix's face, and he doesn't have the sort of face I care to spend long periods of time looking at.

Inside Llewyn Davis. Quite a nice bit of melancholy. Ulysses the cat is the real star of the film as far as I'm concerned.

Welcome to the Punch. Enjoyable if not terribly memorable British action thriller starring James McAvoy (who I quite like).

Life of Pi. So lemme get this straight: the lesson of the film is that God is such a nice story, it doesn't matter if it's true or not? Besides that, it was a lovely film.

The Missionary, with Michael Palin and Maggie Smith. Very funny. But it's a quiet understated sort of humor. Which I quite liked.
